Three Major Scientific Issues that Disprove Darwinian Evolution

There were two fleas on the back of a large dog. They were deep in the fur and nestled on the warm skin of the dog. One flea says to the other flea: “Sometimes I wonder if there really is a dog.” (from the cartoon, The Far Side).

The evidence for the existence of the dog was all around the fleas. It reminds me of the fact that the evidence for the existence of God is all around people. It seems like we have too much evidence. Sometimes we can’t see the forest because of the trees.

Today I’d like to point out three major scientific issues that disprove Darwinian evolution. Why refute Darwinism? Why do I pick on Charles Darwin? It’s because Darwinism is the taproot of secularism. It’s the origins myth of materialistic atheism. Evolution is the cornerstone of the edifice of unbelief. All the errors and brutality of modern society flow out of the rejection of God as creator. Darwinian evolution leads to atheism which leads to lawlessness, fascism, communism, genocide, abortion and sexual immorality.

The “Three strikes, you’re out” method of refuting Darwinian evolution focuses on three riddles Darwinism cannot solve. These three riddles are:

1) Due to the extreme complexity of the simplest living cell, the first life could not possibly have formed by random collisions of atoms in the early earth.

2) The science of genetics proves that genetic mutations are destructive errors in the DNA and mutations don’t add useful information to the DNA. Mutations degrade and garble genetic coding. New biological structures require new base pairs added to DNA. Evolution has no genetic mechanism to add new structures to living organisms.

3) The fossil record shows numerous examples of fossils out of order, including hundreds of examples of modern looking bird and mammal fossils in the Cretaceous dinosaur rock layers.

Let’s look closer at each of these three riddles one at a time:

Riddle #1:  The first riddle is the fact of the extreme complexity of the simplest living cell. Origin of life biologists can’t even agree on a standard theory of a random process for how DNA, RNA and proteins could have formed by chance and assembled themselves into a living cell. Science works against Darwinism here because the more microbiology progresses, the more it reveals the irreducible complexity and interdependence of structures within the simplest of single-celled organisms.

For instance, a single celled algae is able to produce sugars by photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is an extremely complex process involving a multitude of enzymes and co-factors to turn light energy into chemical energy.

Seventeen enzymes are required to assemble chlorophyll. Each enzyme is a complex molecule. If one enzyme is missing chlorophyll is not made. There are many other steps in photosynthesis. Darwinists claim photosynthesis came about by accident, by random unguided processes in the early earth. There is, however, no conceivable step by step process that could produce the complex proteins and enzymes and assemble them by happenstance into photosynthesis structures within cells even in a trillion years.

Riddle #2:  As the field of modern genetics progresses we learn more and more about mutations to DNA. The DNA molecule is a long string of nucleotide base pairs which contain design information like words in a book. Genetic mutations scramble or delete nucleotide base pairs in the DNA. Darwinism requires the addition of vast amounts of new, precisely ordered information into the DNA. Mutations result in degraded information, garbled information or loss of information but never adding the type of quality information that could have put feathers on a reptile to make a bird. Even mutations that cause duplication of a gene don’t add information but merely duplicate information that was already in the DNA.

Mutations are typically caused by radiation or toxic chemicals that interfere with the replication of DNA during cell division. Radiation and toxic chemicals do not bring new nucleotide base pairs into the DNA to add new coding to the DNA. It would take a huge amount of new base pairs added to the DNA, for instance, to add the design of wings to enable a small rodent to evolve into a bat. Not only do thousands of new base pairs have to be added to the DNA but they have to be properly sequenced. Random processes simply cannot do this. The science of genetics is no friend of Darwinian evolution.

Riddle #3:  Dr. Carl Werner, in his book Living Fossils gives much evidence, presented in a scholarly, academic way that documents the fact that mammal and bird fossils have been found in the Cretaceous rock layers among dinosaur fossils. Dr. Werner visited sixty natural history museums and ten dinosaur dig sites in seven countries and consulted paleontologists who revealed the finds of owls, ducks, parrots and other modern birds among dinosaur fossils. Mammal fossils have also been found in abundance among dinosaur fossils. The mammal fossils resemble modern squirrels, beavers, primates and many others.

Dr. Werner interviewed paleontologist Dr. William Clemons of University of California, Berkeley. Clemons told Werner of the finding of a parrot fossil and many other bird fossils in a dinosaur fossil rock layer. This, of course, is totally inconsistent with Darwinism and refutes the theory. Darwinian evolutionists claim that dinosaurs are the ancestors of birds yet many modern birds are fossilized together with dinosaurs.

The fossil record is consistent with the longstanding creationist claim that an intelligent designer, namely the creator God, created all living things in substantially the same forms as they are today. God created life that reproduces “after their kind” (Genesis 1:25). One kind of animal does not reproduce into a different kind of animal.

In the three riddles, science is working against Darwinian evolution. New findings in microbiologygenetics and the fossil record are undermining the claims of evolution. The long knives of scientific facts are circling Darwinism and cutting it to pieces. As Darwinian evolution is exposed as inconsistent with documented scientific evidence it is rejected by more and more people. The secularists have no other origins myth to replace the crumbling Darwinian hypothesis.

The bottom line is that all people, including scientists, must return to the creator God. I’m pleased and encouraged by the growing number of scientists who have become creationists. Some have affiliated with the  Institute for Creation Research and other creationist organizations. Many secular scientists have become part of the Intelligent Design movement.and have affiliated with The Discovery Institute based in Seattle, Washington.

The collapse of Darwinism has caused many people to take a new look at Christianity. When Jesus came to the Jewish people, He worked miracles of healing in the presence of eyewitnesses that proved He was sent by God. Miracles of healing still occur today in meetings held by Christian evangelists and pastors.

Jesus came in fulfillment of over 300 Old Testament prophecies. The prophets foretold that Christ would come and live a sinless life and then suffer and die, taking upon Himself the penalty we deserved for our sins, thereby making atonement. Christ rose from the dead to offer forgiveness of sins to all who call upon Him. Those who receive forgiveness walk with God in a personal one-on-one relationship with God. It’s a love relationship with God. Turn to Christ today to receive forgiveness of sins!

The Experiment that Shook the World

In 1953 the news flashed around the world that Stanley Miller, Ph. D. had formed amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) by shooting electricity through a simulated early earth atmosphere. This was a bold attempt to try to prove that single-celled organisms such as bacteria could form by random interaction of energy and chemicals.

This experiment was gleefully cited in biology lectures and textbooks all over the world. Secular evolutionists claimed it was proof that life could come from nonliving chemicals. I should point out that Stanley Miller, being a respected biologist, never claimed to have produced “life in a test tube” or anything close. He did claim it was a step in that direction. Miller’s modesty didn’t prevent others from hyping the significance of his experiments.

I remember a discussion of the Miller-Urey experiments in my high school biology class in the early seventies. (They were called Miller-Urey experiments because Miller was assisted by his doctoral mentor, Harold Urey.) Some of the students were persuaded that life could come from nonlife even though it was totally absurd to make such a bold leap of faith.

According to origin of life scientist Walter L. Bradley, Ph.D. and many other learned observers, the experiment contained major flaws that invalidated its results. To begin with, Miller used a simulated atmosphere composed largely of ammonia, methane and hydrogen. It was a very bold assumption on Miller’s part to assume that the early earth atmosphere was composed of these highly reactive gases.

Secondly, Miller isolated the amino acids and protected them from the simulated atmosphere as soon as the amino acids formed. He also formed a large amount of tar or resin. The newly formed amino acids were collected and sequestered. He knew that the amino acids would otherwise be immediately destroyed by the same processes used to form them! Miller stacked the deck very favorably and obtained some very bare chemical building blocks. This did not even remotely prove that life could come from nonlife.

Nevertheless, generations of Americans, indeed, people all over the world, have read in their biology textbooks that this experiment gave some degree of proof to the claim that life could form from random interaction of nonliving molecules. (Life coming from nonlife is also called spontaneous generation or proto-evolution or chemical evolution or abiogenesis.) The Miller-Urey experiment unquestionably served to buttress atheistic materialism and therefore has served to accelerate the secularization of Western Civilization.

As a personal note, I remember talking about God with a young man back when I was in college. The young man resisted my claim that God is creator. He said “Didn’t they form life in a test tube a few years ago?” The young guy was no doubt referring to Miller’s famous experiment.

Miller continued with his experiments but none of his later experiments generated either convincing results or great publicity.

Even if one were to grant that amino acids could form randomly and be preserved, this is still a long, long way from their being gathered together to form a living cell. A living cell is more complex than the computer you’re using to read this! There are about 80 different types of amino acids but only about 20 are found in living organisms. Some amino acids are toxic to living things. The 20 correct amino acids have to be randomly sorted out and then randomly assembled into proteins which are very complex molecules. An average protein is composed of over 400 amino acids arranged in precise order.

A “simple” one-celled organism is composed of at minimum 225 different varieties of proteins, assembled in a structure consisting of cell membrane, protoplasm, mitochondria, nucleus, etc. All of this has to occur by a blind, mindless process in a primordial chemical soup composed of tars and other byproducts that bond more readily to amino acids than amino acids bond to each other!

As the field of microbiology has progressed, the impossibility of single-celled organisms forming by chance is more and more apparent. Microbiologists uncover new layers of cellular complexity with each passing year. There is not even a generally accepted theory in place among origin of life scientists to explain how life could form by chance. Many bizarre theories have been put forward but none has been generally accepted.

Even the illustrious biologist Dean Kenyon of San Francisco State University  repudiated chemical affinity theory. Chemical affinity theory is a theory of life origins that Kenyon once championed. Dean Kenyon had the academic integrity to openly renounce this theory when experiments revealed its flaws.

Finally Stanley Miller himself who, perhaps unwittingly, misled generations of science students, had this to say to Scientific American in the February 1991 issue: “The problem of the origin of life has turned out to be much more difficult than I, and most other people envisioned.” A great understatement indeed!

In order to solve the problem of the origin of life I would exhort Dr. Miller to turn to God. God has created us and God sent His Son Jesus to die in our place to take upon Himself the penalty for our sins so that we can be reconciled to God.

(For much of the material in this article I’m indebted to Lee Strobel’s book The Case for Faith pages 129-151.)

“And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:2

Steps to salvation: “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13)

To receive the salvation that Jesus purchased for us at the terrible cost of His suffering and death on our behalf I invite you to pray this simple prayer:

“Dear heavenly Father, I thank you for sending Jesus, the promised Messiah, to die for my sins. I admit that I am a sinner and I ask for your forgiveness on the basis of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I ask you to fill me with your Holy Spirit to empower me to serve you under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, Amen.”  If you prayed that prayer in the humble sincerity of your heart then you have received everlasting life, which includes power to live right in this life and entrance into heaven in the afterlife!

A New Look at Dispensationalism & the Manifestation of the Sons of God

by Bill Nugent

Most people who study the Bible in depth would say that biblical Judaism did not end well. By biblical Judaism I mean the Torah Judaism of the Bible which was centered around animal sacrifices which were offered in the stone Temple located in Jerusalem. The time period was roughly 1500 BC to 33 AD. In this article I will use the term “biblical Judaism” and “dispensational age of law” interchangeably.

By the first century AD, Judaism had a corrupt priesthood, was rigidly legalistic and was oppressed by the Roman occupation. The Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD putting an end to the offering of animal blood sacrifices. At first glance, one could say that the dispensational age of law ended in corruption and tragedy.

However, I believe the scriptures show that in at least one aspect, biblical Judaism ended with great success. This aspect of the successful end of biblical Judaism has ENORMOUS prophetic and practical applications for us today as we near the end of the dispensation of grace which is the church age.

This one aspect of the triumph of biblical Judaism has to do with Jesus of Nazareth being the perfect Jew. Everyone knows that Jesus was (and is) a Jew. The Bible teaches that He was without sin. Hence, Jesus kept the Old Testament law perfectly. He was the only Jew ever to perfectly fulfill the Law. He rebuked the Pharisees over their man made Sabbath rules but He definitely kept God’s Sabbath commands. So what is the significance of Jesus being the perfect Jew? I will show you the striking prophetic ramifications.

To set up the teaching in this article let me give you a thumbnail sketch of Dispensationalism. Dispensationalism is a method of biblical interpretation that divides the Bible into time periods of history. It is in contrast to the more traditional Covenant Theology Method of biblical interpretation. Covenant Theology views the Bible through the lens of the several covenants made between God and man.

I will mention in passing that the dispensational premillennial method of biblical interpretation is the method that most clearly sees the crucially important role of the present Jewish state in the Middle East. Dispensationalists tend to be pro Israel while those who come from a covenantal perspective tend to place less emphasis on the continuing special role of the Jewish people. I will hasten to point out that there are genuine born again believers in both the dispensationalist and covenant persuasions.

Dispensationalists see seven major time periods (called “dispensations”) in the Bible. Each time period begins with a major move of God and the giving of commands followed by a period of time and a mass failure of large numbers of people to obey the commands. Each dispensation ends with a time of great tribulation or judgment on the failure of mankind to obey God’s commands. Each dispensation shows the failure of mankind to obey God by human effort and by implication shows man’s utter dependence on the grace of God.

The seven dispensations are as follows:

1) Innocence: Adam and Eve were given one command and they disobeyed the command and were cast out of Eden.

2) Conscience: The early patriarchs of Genesis lived by their consciences and were to obey the inward witness of right versus wrong. It ended in such rampant evil that God judged the whole earth with a flood. (Jesus later drew a parallel between the days of Noah and the days just before the end time great tribulation before His second coming.)

3) Government: Noah was given instructions to the effect that murderers were to be given the death penalty (Gen. 9:6). This implies the setting up of a court system and a human governmental restraint on evil. This ended with all the people gathered at Shinar building a tower to heaven. Judgment came on them to confuse their languages and they were scattered to the ends of the earth.

4) Promise: God chose Abraham, a righteous man who obeyed God and received the promise of the land of Canaan. It ended with Abraham’s descendants out of their promised land and enslaved in Egypt. Great judgment came on Egypt. (Many Bible teachers have pointed out the striking parallels between the ten plagues on Egypt and the prophecies of future judgments recorded in the book of revelation.)

5) Law: For the first time in history  God’s laws are written down in exhaustive detail and given to a nation to obey. Moses, a righteous man in spite of personal failures (striking the rock twice, etc.) led the Israelites to the promised land. There followed centuries of failure and disobedience on the part of the Israelites that culminated in a 70 year exile in Babylon followed by a return to the land of Israel and more disobedience. At the end of the age of law the people were enslaved by the Romans in the promised land, the Pharisees were heartless legalists, the high priesthood was auctioned off by the Romans to the highest bidder and the Temple was filled with extortioning moneychangers. It ended with the Romans burning Jerusalem and the Temple. (Many Bible teachers have pointed out the striking parallels between the judgments on Israel in 70 AD and the prophecies of future  judgments recorded in the book of Revelation.)

6) Grace: This age began with Jesus, the promised Messiah, dying for our sins and rising from the dead. The early church was pure, in spite of examples of individual failures (Ananias and Sapphira, etc.) and the church began to evangelize the world. This was followed by the Medieval period of centuries of increasing corruption and false doctrine. There followed a Reformation and the rise of a small end time church surrounded by corrupt elements of the great apostasy (abortion, gay marriage, decline of western civilization, etc.) and the rise of the man of sin described in Second Thessalonians 2:3. The judgment of a great tribulation, prophesied in the book of Revelation, will come on the whole world at the end of this dispensation in which we now live.

7) Millennial Reign of Messiah: This age begins at the second coming of Christ and the resurrection of the righteous saints who will rule and reign with Him for a thousand years. It is a period of spectacular world peace in which Isaiah 11:6-10 is fulfilled. It also, amazingly, ends in ignominious failure on the part of a large number (not all) of the people. Revelation 20:7-9 prophesies that they will surround the holy city and that great judgment will come upon them.

The purpose of this article is to show that in the fifth dispensation, the age of law, a major change occurred regarding the usual pattern of failure at the end of dispensations. Though biblical Judaism ended in failure on the part of the nation of Israel there was one individual in that nation that succeeded in fulfilling the Law of Moses down to the very last letter. His name is Jesus, the promised Messiah of Israel and He kept the Law perfectly. Jesus was Him “who did no sin” (I Peter 2:24). Jesus was the perfect Jew.

Furthermore I wish to show an amazing prophetic parallel. The church is referred to in scripture as the body of Christ. As the fifth dispensation ended with the perfect Jew, I believe the sixth dispensation ends with the perfect church! This perfect church will not be the whole church but will be a small portion of the church that comes to full stature in Christ (Ephesians 4:13). The New Testament refers to this in Romans 8:19 “For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.”

The sons of God (born again Christians) who grow to full maturity in Christ will be the perfect church. The term “sons” does not exclude women. All of us are sons of God (Gal. 3:26) but none of us are yet fully sanctified. Those who come to full sanctification will be manifested (revealed) to all creation. God will use the manifested sons to do great works in the end times before the second coming of Christ. I’m tempted to teach on how the sons will climb the seven mountains of influence but I’ll leave that for another message.

Most Christians believe that the present age will end in failure with either the church being raptured out or barely muddling through the great tribulation in the end times. I believe that this implicit defeatism leads to lowered expectations and lowered effort on the part of Christians. Those who expect the church to be defeated are less likely to diligently seek the Lord for full sanctification. Jesus commands us to be perfect “Be ye therefore perfect” (Matthew 5:48).

So what are the prophetic and practical applications of Jesus being the perfect Jew?

As I’ve said, the prophetic parallel is that the present dispensation in which we now live will end with a perfect church or more specifically, a body of fully sanctified overcomers. Unfortunately, the perfect church will not be the whole church. It will be a remnant, an end-time army, a company of manifested sons of God.

The practical application of this is that each of us can set a goal of becoming fully sanctified! Aiming for full sanctification is better than settling for the mediocre status quo. We must be careful not to arrogantly claim to be fully sanctified when we have not yet attained it. We must humbly rely on the grace of God to grow unto full stature in Christ.

The “manifested sons” teaching has been a source of controversy in the church. John G. Lake was severely criticized for his role in promoting it. This is unfortunate as I believe it is clearly taught in scripture. I have taught on the manifestation of the sons of God for many years. I have always taught it from a conservative Christian perspective. My book The Cross, Self-Denial and the Manifestation of the Sons of God and my article, DTF Special Issue #7 “The Manifestation of the Sons of God and the Resurrection of the Dead” are both available for free download on my website ww.bnugent.org.

Steps to salvation: Jesus said “Ye must be born again.” (John 3:7)

1) Believe that God created you and loves you and sent the Messiah (Messiah is Hebrew for Christ) to redeem you. 2) Believe that Jesus Christ came to die for you to take upon Himself the penalty of your sins. (Isaiah 53:5-6, John 6:29, Romans 4:5, First Peter 3:18) 3) Turn from sin and call on the name of Jesus to receive forgiveness. (Romans 10:13) 4) Receive Jesus as Savior and experience the new birth. (John 1:12, Acts 2:38) 5) Follow Him as Lord. (John 14:21)

Prayer to receive salvation:

“Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13) To receive the salvation that Jesus purchased for us at the terrible cost of His suffering and death on our behalf I invite you to pray this simple prayer: “Dear heavenly Father, I thank you for sending Jesus, the promised Messiah, to die for my sins. I admit that I am a sinner. I repent of my sins and I ask for your forgiveness on the basis of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I ask you to fill me with your Holy Spirit to empower me to serve you under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, Amen.”

The Problem of Evil: Why Does a Good God Allow Evil?

One of the most basic and fundamental questions that any religion or philosophical system must answer is “What is your response to the problem of evil?” Thought systems rise or fall depending on how they deal with the problem of evil.
 –
Hinduism deals with evil by claiming that the world is “maya” which means “illusion.” Hindu author Jayaram V put it this way: “Our scriptures declare that creation is the play of consciousness.” Yoga Vashista said “The world is nothing but a mere vibration of consciousness in space . . . It is like the marvelous dream of a person who is awake.” (Hinduwebsite.com) If planet earth is a mere illusion then good and evil don’t exist in any real sense.
 –
The ancient Greek philosophers: the Stoics, the Epicureans and others all wrestled with the contradiction between good and evil. The rationalist philosophers of the early modern era, including Descartes, offered answers to the dilemma. The Empiricist philosophers, the utilitarians and the pragmatists all touched on the problem of evil or wrestled with it down into the mud as they tried to unriddle the universe. In short, humankind has been perplexed by the existence of evil since the dawn of time. However, I will show you that evil is not only not a problem but is actually necessary. I will explain the necessity of evil.
 –
Who am I to offer my two cents regarding this issue of towering importance? Frankly, it’s not me who loftily opines but rather I will simply and humbly transmit what God has to say through the Bible. The Bible describes and deals with evil on almost every page. The Bible doesn’t whitewash or sugarcoat the problem of evil. The Bible describes evil so plainly that there are some Bible passages we prefer young children not read.
 –
One thing is clear: the Bible teaches that God created the world good. “And God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good” (Genesis 1:31 NASB). Evil entered in as an intruder. God allowed evil to enter in. This is important to understand. God did not do moral evil but merely allowed evil; otherwise God would be morally evil. It is also clear that God created human beings as sentient beings with free moral agency. God didn’t create robots who constantly do good with industrial efficiency without any real choice.
 –
You can reveal virtue only in the presence of its opposite. Love is ultimately revealed as it is contrasted with hate. Courage is developed and revealed only in the presence of danger, which is evil. Joy is revealed in contrast to depression; compassion is revealed as a loving response to poverty. This brings us not to the problem of evil but the necessity of evil. The presence of evil is necessary to develop character and reveal character in people. Evil is necessary to reveal God’s goodness.
 –
All of us have gone into a jewelry store and seen a beautiful diamond displayed on a dark velvet panel. A diamond wouldn’t show very well on a white panel. The moral evil in our world is like the dark velvet on which the diamond of God’s holy and loving character is revealed. God would not allow evil to enter into His world for one second unless it was necessary to reveal and develop character in human beings who are free moral agents. God permits us to choose to be good and do good. God also permits us to be evil and do evil. God permits Mother Theresa and Adolf Hitler.
 –
Imagine if we were to live for all eternity and never know what courage is. Imagine if we never saw love challenged by hate. Would we really know anything about joy and pleasure if we never felt any pain? God created a world in which evil is possible. He allowed evil to flourish for a time in order to reveal good and develop goodness in people who choose goodness. Those who choose evil and refuse to repent and accept the offer of forgiveness of sins through Christ will have their fill of evil in the afterlife in a place of separation from God’s love and mercy. Everyone gets what they choose.
 –
God will ultimately abolish evil. “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away” (Revelation 21:4). “And there shall be no more curse” (Revelation 22:3).
 –
The secular world has abolished the future. You might ask: “How can anyone abolish the future?  Isn’t that a bit absurd?” What I mean is that the atheist existentialist philosophers and Darwinists deny that a human being has any conscious existence after death. Hence, there is no future for any human being. All of the love, joy, courage, generosity, kindness and compassion that is developed and experienced in a lifetime is lost at the moment of death. In this secular thought system, evil makes no sense. In fact good makes no ultimate sense either because all things end when the lights go out at death. This secular futility leads to nihilism and hopelessness. It causes many to become unmoored and turn to drugs and other vices.
 –
Life does make sense and it endures forever. A human lifetime is merely time spent in a womb preparing to be birthed into eternity. God has provided the way to be freed from all evil. God sent His Son Jesus, the Messiah of Israel who came in fulfillment of over 300 Old Testament prophecies. The prophets foretold that Christ would come and live a sinless life, teach us God’s wisdom and then suffer and die for us, taking upon Himself the penalty we deserved for our sins. The prophets foretold that Christ would rise from the dead and offer forgiveness of sins to all who turn to Him in repentance. Call upon the name of Jesus Christ today to receive forgiveness of sins!
Steps to salvation:
Jesus said “Ye must be born again”
 (John 3:7).

1) Believe that God created you and loves you and sent the Messiah (Messiah is Hebrew for Christ) to redeem you.
2) Believe that Jesus Christ came to die for you, to take upon Himself the penalty of your sins (Isaiah 53:5-6, John 6:29, Romans 4:5, First Peter 3:18).
3) Turn from sin and call on the name of Jesus to receive forgiveness of sins (Romans 10:13).
4) Receive Jesus as Savior and experience the new birth (John 1:12, Acts 2:38).
5) Follow Jesus Christ as Lord (John 14:15).

Prayer to receive salvation:

“Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).
To receive the salvation that Jesus purchased for us at the terrible cost of His suffering and death on our behalf I invite you to pray this simple prayer:

“Dear heavenly Father, I thank you for sending Jesus, the promised Messiah, to die for my sins. I admit that I am a sinner. I repent of my sins and I ask you to forgive me on the basis of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I ask you to fill me with your Holy Spirit to empower me to serve you under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, Amen.”

If you prayed this prayer in the humble sincerity of your heart, then you have received everlasting life, which includes power to live right in this life and entrance into heaven in the afterlife!

How the “Ancient Aliens” Myth Deceives People

In January of 1973 I was a high school junior and my mind was a toxic swirl of atheism, agnosticism and shallow, legalistic religion. I struggled with anxiety and a touch of obsessive-compulsive disorder. It seemed that each day I leaned one way and then another in my thoughts about religion or rejection of religion. I grimly pursued my classwork amid alcohol induced confusion about origin and destiny.

One night I flipped on the TV in our suburban New York home and was treated to a bizarre “documentary” show narrated by none other than Rod Serling of Twilight Zone fame. The show was titled “In Search of Ancient Astronauts” and it presented the opinions of Swiss hotelier turned writer, Erich Von Daniken (1935-    ). It was a biased presentation of Von Daniken’s belief that extraterrestrial spacecraft landed on earth in ancient times and introduced stone cutting technology to the Egyptians and others that aided them in building mega-lithic (big stone) buildings, including pyramids and other structures.

I was enthralled by the ancient aliens theory. Some family members and classmates were also persuaded. The ancient aliens theory added a new layer to my tormented and twisted thinking regarding life origins and ultimate destiny.  I remember a big discussion in physics class at school. The teacher was skeptical and refuted much of the evidence Von Daniken presented. Von Daniken is not an archaeologist and his ideas were rejected by professional archaeologists back in the 1970s and still are today.

Despite academic rejection, the ancient aliens ideas of Von Daniken and Zecharia Sitchin and others have gained great traction in popular culture and are extremely dangerous. Von Daniken wrote the book Chariots of the Gods in 1968 and followed with a series of books with a similar message. His first book, Chariots of the Gods, has the subtitle “Was God an astronaut?” That subtitle reflects a blasphemous undercurrent to the ancient aliens theory.

I saw a segment on a History Channel “Ancient Aliens” show in which a presenter claimed that the revelations given to Moses in the Sinai were given by extraterrestrial beings or what could be called ancient astronauts. Your first reaction may be that such an assertion is so far fetched that no one could believe it. However, millions of people ascribe to the ancient aliens theory and many have rejected the God of the Bible as a result. I also was deceived for a while. Von Daniken and Sitchin’s books have sold over 75 million copies in more than 40 languages.

We must be prepared to confront “speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God” (2 Corinthians 10:5 NASB). Fortunately, the ancient aliens theory and the entire extraterrestrial edifice is very easy to refute. Australian archaeologist Clifford Wilson has written two excellent books refuting Von Daniken titled Crash Go the Chariots and The Chariots Still Crash. Other authors and researchers have refuted the ancient aliens theory. Interestingly, even Von Daniken himself has changed his opinion on some of his alleged evidence. He no longer believes the Easter Island mega-liths or the iron pillar of Delhi were influenced by extraterrestrials.

To be fair, I will point out that the History Channel does occasionally present the views of researchers who reject the ancient aliens theory. One segment mentioned that the design for an ancient sculpture that was alleged to be a depiction of a spacecraft could have been received in a “shamanistic state.” In other words the ancient artist didn’t really see a metal spaceship from another planet but saw some kind of nonmaterial apparition. A shamanistic state is an altered state of consciousness due to occultic or narcotic influence.

Let me briefly explain where UFOs come from. UFO researchers are divided into two different viewpoints in explaining UFOs. These viewpoints are the extraterrestrial hypothesis and the interdimensional hypothesis. The extraterrestrial hypothesis is the claim that UFOs are metal spaceships with astronauts from planets in star systems within our own physical universe. The interdimensional view is that UFOs are nonphysical entities or spirits that travel from different dimensions and enter our universe from the unseen spiritual realm.

The interdimensional hypothesis is more consistent  with the Bible and the Christian worldview because it can be inferred that the other dimensions from which UFOs travel are the same as the realm of spirit. The Bible certainly teaches about the spirit world.

Christian researchers and some secular researchers reject the extraterrestrial hypothesis and maintain the interdimensional view. Famous secular UFO researcher, Jacques Vallee, holds the interdimensional view. In studying UFOs, I’ve come to believe that we’re dealing with intelligent life not from another planet but from another dimension. It’s not astronauts from outer space but spirit beings from the realm of spirit. Malevolent UFO aliens are demons and they can disguise themselves as humanoid beings or astronauts.

I’m open to the idea that good angels can also appear as lights in the sky or as lights on earth. In the Bible, in Acts 12:7, we read of an angel appearing to the apostle Peter in light.. Also remember that Ezekiel, the prophet, saw some bizarre but holy phenomena recorded in the book of Ezekiel in the Old Testament (Ezekiel 1:4-28). Angels are good spirits that inhabit other dimensions. The dimensions they inhabit are the dimensions of the spirit world. I hold to the interdimensional viewpoint.

The ancient aliens theory promoted by Von Daniken, Sitchins and the History Channel is based on the spurious claim that UFOs are metal spaceships from planets in distant star systems. They hold to the extraterrestrial hypothesis.

I regard demonic UFOs who travel from the spirit dimensions as generally of the same category as poltergeists, hauntings, occultism, shamanism and other manifestations of evil spirits. I hold this view because the teachings that are transmitted from aliens to leaders of UFO cults are antibiblical and often lead to bizarre behavior such as the Heaven’s Gate mass suicide. Also, the horrific animal mutilations attributed to UFOs in which animals have their blood drained and have organs removed with surgical precision is further evidence of the demonic origin of UFOs.

Have no fear of demons appearing as flying saucers or disguised as extraterrestrial humanoid beings. Don’t be deceived by cult groups claiming New Age, extraterrestrial connections and phenomena. The Bible teaches that Christ is above all and every knee must bow before Christ who conquered sin through His death and resurrection. There are instances in which people have thwarted UFO abductions by calling on the name of Jesus Christ for help.

The ancient astronaut theory offers great appeal to young people in our present age of rocketry and space exploration. The ancient astronaut theory is just one more thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. It must be exposed and vigorously refuted.

We must point people to Jesus Christ who came in fulfillment of over 300 Old Testament Bible prophecies written hundreds of years before His birth. No other person in all of history can match this claim! Jesus worked miracles in front of eyewitnesses and this is recorded in the Gospels of the New Testament. Miracles continue to be worked today by Christians who rely on the power of Christ.

Jesus suffered and died to take upon Himself the penalty of our sins, thus making atonement. He rose from the dead in victory to offer forgiveness of sins to all who turn to Him in repentance. Call upon Jesus Christ today to receive forgiveness of sins!

Steps to salvation:

Jesus said “Ye must be born again” (John 3:7).

The 1967 Summer of Love and Its Message for Today

This year is fifty years since the 1967 Summer of Love. It was a watershed. It was a pivotal time in our history. It was so much more than just flower children singing peace songs. It was the culmination of decades of philosophical and political turmoil.

The leaders of the new hippy movement put out a call to all the hippies across America to come to San Francisco in the summer of 1967. The Summer of Love unfolded in a chaotic way and brought in about 100,000 people by most estimates. There were speeches, rallies, music, free food, sexual promiscuity, drugs and boatloads of emotional idealism.

It opened with the Monterey Pop Festival, June 16-18, 1967, just south of San Francisco. Acts included Eric Burden and the Animals, Simon and Garfunkel, Canned Heat, Jimi Hendrix and The Mamas and the Papas. There were gatherings and festivals throughout the summer in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.

It’s impossible to really understand the meaning of the summer of love and the hippy movement that promoted it without looking at the deeper philosophical backdrop. The hippy movement wasn’t a flash in the pan. There’s an important message for us all in understanding the idealism, narcissism, pessimism, apathy, activism and optimism of the young people who transformed western civilization beginning in the 1960s. If we understand the lesson of the hippies it will shed valuable light on the human condition as a whole.

The hippies had youthful idealism and zealously sought to change the world and make it a place of utopian peace. On the other hand, many of them had stifling pessimism that sought to, as Timothy Leary put it, “Tune in, turn on, drop out.” These are polar opposites. What could possibly cause these cross currents of hippy attitude? Dropping out and getting high on the one hand and zealous political activism on the other! I think the answer to this conundrum is postmodernism. Postmodernism is the philosophical backdrop that explains the ironic twists and turns of the whole confused era of the 1960s.

Postmodern philosophy really came of age and went mainstream in the 1960s yet fewer than one in a hundred people can succinctly explain what postmodernism actually is.  Postmodernism, as its name suggests, is that which comes after modernism. Modernism came out of the Enlightenment “age of reason” of the 18th century. Postmodernism is an emotional rebellion against modern reason, rationality and order. Postmodernism, when you boil it all down, is moral relativism. Moral relativism is the idea that each person makes up his or her own morals and no moral code is better than any other moral code.

The sixties slogan “Do your own thing” really captures the essence of postmodernism. The 1980s slogan “Perform random acts of kindness” is another postmodernist morsel.

The parents of the sixties hippies were modernist in their philosophical outlook. Modernism says there is absolute truth; there is a superior moral code and that moral code is traditional, educated, sophisticated western values. The parents of the hippies said “America is morally good and we must stamp out fascism, communism and whatever other ism gets in our way.” The parents resisted the postmodernist rejection of modernism. This was the “generation gap.”

To get perspective, let me give you a brief history of how the hippy movement got started.

There arose a new movement in the late 1940s called the “beats” or “beatniks.” They were a generation older than the 1967 summer of love hippies. The beat generation came out of the alienation and anonymity of 20th century urban life. The term “beat” means down and out. They rejected the material success of the 40s and 50s. A beat hero was Jack Kerouac (1922-1969) who wrote the seminal book On the Road and the play The Beat Generation. An inspiring quote from Jack is “I have nothing to offer anyone except my own confusion.” William Burroughs and Allen Ginsburg were Jack’s associates.

Beatniks were also called “Bohemians” and “hipsters.” The men wore goatees, sunglasses and berets; the women wore black leotards and let their hair grow long and flowing. They used the 1930s Jazz term “cool”  and phrases like “cool, man, cool!” and “groovy.” Their politics was liberal but their political involvement negligible.

There was a generational shift when the crowds of young hipsters started hanging out with the old beats. The younger people wore bright clothes and believed in political activism to change the world. The beats called them “hippies.” The beats hung out in the North Beach section of San Francisco. The hippies preferred a neighborhood around the intersection of two streets called Haight and Ashbury in San Francisco near Golden Gate Park

The beats had often dabbled in eastern religion and the hippies who followed them often did too. But there arose among the hippies many who turned to the love of God through Christ. The year 1967 also saw the rise of The Jesus Movement. It was an ironic sight to see young people who overtly rejected their parents conservative ways suddenly embrace Bible based Christianity. Many were baptized in the Pacific ocean. They called themselves “Jesus People. The nonchristian hippies called them “Jesus Freaks.” Chuck Smith and the Calvary Chapel churches were influential in the early years. The Jesus movement spread across the nation and lasted many years as young people by the thousands, dare I say millions, turned to Christ to receive forgiveness of sins.

Postmodernism essentially springs out of Darwinism. Darwinian evolution is the claim that human beings are descendants of apes and therefore, people are mere products of nature. Implicit in this is the claim that humans have no souls, no life after death and no future. Conscious thoughts cease at death. This is why postmodernism leads to nihilism. Nihilism means nothingness; no purpose for existence and no real reason to try to improve society. No wonder so many hippies tuned in, turned on and dropped out!

Postmodernism also leads some people to reject the pessimism of nihilism and embrace narcissism. Narcissism is radical self love. It is self preservation and self indulgence. Narcissism is also – and this is crucial – the impetus to form a new moral code based on one’s own moral preferences. Each person makes up their own moral code. People who make up similar moral codes then join up and try to force their moral code on the rest of society. They agree on a new politically correct moral absolute. Francis Schaeffer called such absolutes “arbitrary absolutes.” This accounts for the radical social activism of the postmodern leftist hippies of the 1960s. They wished to impose a socialist utopia on American society. It sprang out of their narcissism.

The hippies had a wide variety of viewpoints. Some wondered “why try to improve a society of evolved apes that have no souls and no future?” Just get high. Others joined together to form communes and separate themselves from society. Others wanted to make America and the world into one giant commune. Some of the hippies turned to Christ and said “We’re not evolved apes, we are children of God and we have souls that will live forever. We must turn from our sins and ask for forgiveness through Christ who died for our sins. We must win others to Christ because human life is sacred and people will live forever either in a place with God or in a place without Him.”

The majority of the Summer of Love hippies didn’t turn to Christ but rather returned to their homes with new narcissistic zeal. Their culture of sexual promiscuity, drugs and alienation soon filtered through American society so that today many hippie values are mainstream. The idealism that led them to believe that they could unite the world in love has long ago subsided. The 1980s saw the rise of the “Me Generation.” The “free love” sexual promiscuity caused family breakdown and spread venereal diseases. Broken families produce broken people and they’re everywhere.

There is ultimate truth and absolute moral values. These moral absolutes are not discovered by modern man’s reason or conjured up from the emotions of the postmodern narcissistic self. The moral absolutes were revealed by God in the Bible. They include the Ten Commandments and the teachings of Jesus. The Bible is a book vindicated by hundreds of predictive prophecies and their fulfillments. No other writing of any kind throughout all of human history has anything to compare with that. Most sacred writings of other faiths have few, if any, prophecies. The predictive prophecies contained in the Bible are like God’s signature on His holy book. His holy book says “God is love” (I John 4:8). Emotions do matter after all.

Steps to salvation:
Jesus said “Ye must be born again” (John 3:7).

1) Believe that God created you and loves you and sent the Messiah (Messiah is Hebrew for Christ) to redeem you.

My Personal Journey Through Darwinian Evolution

Sitting in public school science class in the fifth grade, I saw a classmate flip through an evolution picture book. The boy excitedly exclaimed that apes could turn into people over time.  I got a dramatic lesson in evolution in that teachable moment. I was converted to the religion of blind chance plus apes equals human beings. It was the year 1966 and I had recently made the transition from Catholic parochial school to public school. I went from being a devout Catholic to budding atheist within a few months.

Darwinism is the taproot of secularism. Darwinian evolution is the origins myth of atheism. Darwinism is taught in public schools at taxpayer expense and it destroys the faith of many. I was one of millions of young people who cast aside Christian faith and morals.

I was a very serious little boy. Before my embrace of atheism I was very religious and conscientious. I was the teacher’s pet. I observed things. I analyzed and pondered. For years I paid close attention in religion class in Saint Mary’s Elementary School in Katonah, New York. I remember a nun teaching me that Christ was raised from the dead. My parents took me to Saint Mary’s church every Sunday. I went to confession every few months and did acts of contrition as commanded to me by the priests.

Paradoxically, I also had a great interest in nature. I loved the outdoor world. I spent countless hours at nearby Todd’s Pond, catching turtles and frogs. I also had an interest in dinosaurs and fossils. My parents took me to the Museum of Natural History in New York City. The full scale skeletons of dinosaurs were fascinating for adults, much more so to an impressionable child.

I learned about fossils and paleontology at an earlier age than most kids in the New York City suburbs. My inordinate interest in fossils set me up for the public school lessons on atheistic, blind chance, goo to you by way of the zoo, Darwinian evolution. I swallowed it hook line and sinker. The public school teachers seldom mentioned the gaps in the fossil record or the lack of transitional forms.

My devout Catholicism fell by the wayside. Atheism seemed so liberating. I didn’t have to obey religious laws, rules, precepts and commands. I could make my own rules and break any rules anytime. I could live for myself and live for pleasure. I began to live recklessly and got into trouble.

As a ten year old kid I didn’t do much in the way of grievous sin or varsity venality. As I got older, though, my troubles increased. As I got bigger, my sins got bigger. Foul language and schoolboy pranks grew into drugs, drunkenness and larceny. I was headed downhill fast by the time I arrived on college campus in the fall of ’74.

Getting back to my public school lessons on evolution, I found it easy to believe that the accumulation of beneficial mutations in DNA could change one animal into another. We studied genetics in biology class in the ninth grade. It all seemed so simple and so reasonable. Reasonable, that is, until you looked at it a little more closely. In my extensive studies in genetics since those early boyhood years, I’ve come to find out that beneficial genetic mutations are an extremely tiny percentage of the overall number of mutations. Mutations are overwhelmingly destructive to the DNA.

Any internet search of genetic diseases will show thousands of diseases and conditions caused by bad mutations. Thousands of diseases caused by genetic mutations are listed on websites all over the internet. There are only a few, perhaps a dozen, beneficial genetic mutations in the human genome being studied. Any geneticist will freely admit that beneficial mutations are extremely rare. Creationists and even many nonreligious scientists see this as a major flaw in the evolution hypothesis. I wish I knew that when I was ten or fifteen or eighteen years old!

Also consider that mutations don’t add new information to the DNA that would cause the addition of new biological structures. The mutagenic chemicals and radiation that causes mutations don’t bring new, additional nucleotide base pairs to the DNA. Nucleotide base pairs are like letters of words giving information in DNA. It would take thousands, if not millions of new base pairs added to the DNA to put wings on a lizard to make a bird or add a smart brain to an ape to make a human. Radiation does not add base pairs to DNA.

Now, many years after my primary school indoctrination into the church of Darwin, I look at nature in a different way. I see superbly engineered, fine tuned biological structures. I see the retractable poisonous fangs of a snake with its poison bladders and ducts. How could that gradually form, step by step, by accident? I read that it takes 30 muscles to flap the wings of an insect. The metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly is an amazingly complex and inscrutable process in a “simple” lower form of life. These structures are irreducibly complex, meaning that a partially formed organ system such as the fangs of a snake would be very disadvantageous. The fang and poison bladder system of a snake would have to be formed all at once or not at all.

Mutations simply shuffle pre-existing base pairs in DNA, usually causing a loss of information. There is virtually never a net gain of any useful information in DNA caused by mutations. Even genetic duplication is just an extra copy of pre-existing base pairs in the DNA.

In public school I was not informed of the glaring flaws in the theory of evolution. The genetic evidence and even the fossil evidence that undermined Darwinism was seldom, if ever discussed. There are many skunks in the woodpile of Darwinism. I was not allowed to see them or smell them. Darwinism was taught in a biased way as the dogma of a new secular faith. It would be many years later that I would read scientific literature that exposed the major shortcomings of Darwinism.

However, as a young teenager, I began to hear of reports of Christian miracles. There were reliable reports of extraordinary miraculous healings that occurred in answer to prayer. My own father, Paul C. Nugent, told me of some accounts of miracles.

The nuns in Catholic school had taught me, back when I was in parochial school, that the prophets foretold the coming of Christ. Fulfillment of prophecy is also a type of miracle. I pondered these things. As a young atheist, hearing about miracles and reflecting on my boyhood Christian training, I began to doubt atheism.

I also came to find out that Christ died for our sins. Christ died in our place. The prophets foretold in Isaiah 53 and other Old Testament passages that Christ, in His suffering and death, would bear the penalty of our sins. I never understood that or had it clearly explained to me in my parochial school training in Catholicism. The nuns taught many things from the Bible and from the Catholic catechism but I don’t remember anything on substitutionary atonement.

I eventually learned that the Bible teaches that our good works can’t earn salvation. Good works are important but only the atoning death of Christ could pay the penalty of our sins and give us forgiveness of sins and right standing with God.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9). “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God” (First Peter 3:18).

I turned away from my sins as a young man in college and made a commitment to Christ. I received Christ as Savior and I follow Him as Lord. I left evolution behind. I regard Darwinism as a flawed hypothesis. I continue to enjoy nature and I realize that even nature itself, by its very complexity, reveals the work of the Creator. I invite you to turn to Christ today to receive forgiveness of sins.

Steps to salvation: Jesus said “Ye must be born again” (John 3:7).

1) Believe that God created you and loves you and sent the Messiah (Messiah is Hebrew for Christ) to redeem you.

2) Believe that Jesus Christ came in fulfillment of over 300 Bible prophecies to die for you, to take upon Himself the penalty of your sins (Isaiah 53:5-6, John 6:29, Romans 4:5, First Peter 3:18).

If you prayed this prayer in the humble sincerity of your heart then you have received everlasting life, which includes power to live right in this life and entrance into heaven in the afterlife!
